Hostage / Crisis Negotiation
First Responder

Training personnel to serve effectively as first responders can have a significant positive effect on the outcome of a hostage / crisis incident.

In addition to law enforcement and corrections personnel, this course provides beneficial information for school districts, colleges, government agencies, hospitals, treatment facilities, and others who may be faced with making the initial response to a hostage or crisis situation.

2-day course: 14 classroom hours.

Topics covered:

- Employee safety
- Establishing perimeters and isolating the crisis site
- The first contact
- The Crisis Management Plan
- Obtaining intelligence
- Communicating Safely
- Overview of negotiation principles
- Using active listening skills
- Having "difficult conversations"
- Pre-incident logistics (resources, floor plans, equipment, etc.)
- Basic suicide awareness
- Record-keeping during an incident
- Successful transitions
- Emotional first-aid
- Role-play: simulated drill

Other topics can be added that are unique to specific populations.

- Strategies for coming to mutually acceptable agreement when in conflict
- Understanding the significance of the complexities of one's ""Life Puzzle" to the negotiator and to those in crisis
